VIDEO: Videobloggers invade the TV box
I do a live call-in show each week on Ch. 56 at 11:30pm in Manhattan.
A while ago, my friend Kenyatta suggested doing a live show using webcams.
So I decided to try it tonight.
I put out an email to the videoblogging group an hour before the show and got crazy response.
The Videobloggers represented.
Who are these obsessed people?
With webcams and iChat AV, I networked in 6 different people who were spread out across the country. (could have been global)
Taking live phone calls, my guests could speak directly with the viewers in Manhattan.
Because MNN streams all their shows, my guests could watch the show on the internet.
Using this simple technology, we basically did what a Network does with satellite feeds.
We did zero planning for this show; it kind of just happened as an experiment while I was eating dinner.
Imagine if we had a plan.
Honestly, it is extremely comforting to find other people on this planet trying to connect.
Wanting to make change and have fun doing it.
Changing the world is the coolest thing you can do.
And it starts by us just getting to know each other better.
We can do this using inexpensive cameras, the internet, and the force of our will.
Then the real work begins.
Check out our modest beginning at me-tv, our new little project.
All thanks to Chris, Daniell, Adam, Ryanne, Josh, Shannon, and Charlene for showing up tonight.
Enjoy the show.

Dying to see this!
That does it, no more daily digest emails for me...

Sorry I wasn't able to get on iChat in time. Instead I had to "tivo" it! Best "You" clip yet!

OMG my pants just exploded, that was fucking awesome.
Esp. with the Peaches, very nice touch my man.
I can't believe I missed it. You gotta do it again and again.
Right, but what do you actually do with it... I dunno.
Someday we'll all be vid-networked and can wish each other happy new year from around the globe.

this show was a little too crazy.
we need to slow it down.
make it real.

Hey Jay, Ryan forwarded me to your site. I watched your post and I have to say... that was awesome! Was this edited down from a half-hour live show? It is like having a satellite feed in your back yard.
If you're looking for ideas of what to do, one way to keep it focused is to have a topic for everyone to comment on. Another thing to think about is to have an associate producer doing all the switching for you, so you can act as moderator without having to worry about the technical stuff. Great work, looking forward to seeing more!

Peaches rocks! great intro! Wish I could've seen the fun... didn't tune in to the stream so I was pretty bewildered when I was on air.

WOW! I am soooo impressed! A complete breakthrough, Jay. I'm tempted to fly up to Manhattan and take that class! ;-)
Beyond cool... congratulations!

Hey Jay-
Congrats on your successful and grand experiment last night. A bunch of us here have been talking about it all day and excited about where we are all headed. You've paved an important path to follow and build upon. For a throw together show....well, you did something pretty revolutionary there! We're thinking of ways now to have our Cambodian producers talk directly to their homeland live on their local shows! What's the value of scap metal in a satellite dish anyway?!

Hey jay, Just revisiting a couple old posts. The technology you demoed here rocks! Of course you've got thousands of people who tuned into channel 56 who are as confused as hell.
I do agree with the commenters above. I would ABSOLUTELY love to see you continue to work with this technology, refine it, and work it into your program. This post was all about the technology, let's see it put to a practicle use on a topic, do a talk show format. Have a conversational thing going on on a topic. Get an expert or two on a topic and take calls. I think it would be awesome. Get a friend to act as a producer to do the switching and handle isight connections. Don't forget to have fun though. :)
While I find the call in thing funny the first time it uneforetuneatly gets sort of confusing and has no practical purpose unless you can screen the calls.

When is the next episode airing?
Get your ass in gear Dedman, and

Looking forward to the MNN/HD
Christmas special this year.

Oh man... I wish I could watch that, but I'm at work and the sound is a little unpredictable. I'm going to have to tune in at home at some point. Love the facial hair, absolutely perfect.
(I realize you posted this a long time ago, but I just found it on VlogMap's revlog section...)

HOLY SHIT,
it's 5.19 in the AM here in london and two and a half years later this is still blowing my mind.
very funny, and very cool.
kind of what people have been getting all excited about this summer with these new live video sites... only most of them can't present anywhere near as well as you (i love your style), and it flowed so nicely with the vision & audio mixing - much better than a flashmeeting or a blogtv session.
in 2007, i'm still wondering, what are the possibilities, what are the practicalities?
ha!

That is SOOOO futuristic... in a Mad Max, "the future's less technical than the past" kind of way that it looks COMPLETELY staged and fake! :D
Except, of course for Ryanne being so gleeful about seeing herself on the screen and trying to tear herself away from looking at herself to look in the camera! :D
Das Sveetnezz!!! :D
